The staff of the Communication & Marketing department work tirelessly to present the unique image of the Semperoper to the broader public through a wide variety of media. It’s not that the music sounds suddenly contemporary: it doesn’t.

That being said, this pas de cinq, here given the title 5 (perhaps that’s the title when performed as a standalone, but why bother?) The dancers of Dresden Semperoper Ballet have a reputation for applying exceptional classical technique to challenging contemporary choreography with aplomb. With that caveat, the four dances on the program provided a peek at both, and it whets the appetite. Gina Scott and Zarina Stahnke are engaging dancers who showed promise – which Stahnke further demonstrated in the evening’s closing dance. I was lucky enough to get tickets for a ballet performance in Semper Opera House. Aaron S. Watkin was appointed Artistic Director of the Semperoper Ballett on August 1st, 2006. Tsunaki and Vallejo again excelled as the lead pair, abetted by six supporting dancers. Their level of technique is stunning, and there is an appreciation for art, not just "tricks". It’s expansive, its component dancers (3 women, 2 men) mix and mingle and separate out in various combinations and interesting stage utilization, and the choreography is sufficiently varied so that there is little repetition. Watkin was a personal choreographic assistant to Mr William Forsythe, in charge of setting and rehearsing his ballets on dance companies throughout the world, including Kirov Ballet, Paris Opera, Dutch National Ballet among others. Included was a new pas de cinq to music by Adolphe Adam, Giselle‘s composer.
